A Guide to GDABVI Services

Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired primarily serves the seven southeast Michigan counties of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe, Livingston, and St. Clair.

GDABVI is a non-profit organization which provides quality, innovative services that increase self-reliance, productivity and dignity for persons who are blind or visually impaired. The agency services include:

Rehabilitation
Our Social Work and Rehabilitation Teaching staff teach new skills to legally blind adults over the age of 60 to encourage independent, productive lifestyles.

Rehabilitation Teaching is a method of training blind and visually impaired individuals to use adaptive skills, enabling them to live independently. Assessment, counseling, and training are provided in the comfort of the client's home environment. Instructors are certified specialists in blind rehabilitation.

Areas of instruction may include communication, orientation and mobility, and daily living activities. Communication skills include signature and handwriting, telephone use, braille, and the use of recording equipment and low vision aids. Orientation and mobility training teaches sighted guide, white cane use, and outdoor mobility. Daily living skills which are adapted for the person with a visual impairment include money management, telling time, sewing skills, food preparation, grooming, clothing, housekeeping, adapting appliances for use, and crafts. Rehabilitation teachers may also assist a nurse with insulin management techniques.

For Rehabilitation Services, contact GDABVI if you or someone you know has a vision problem; is 60 years or older; resides in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Livingston, St. Clair or Washtenaw counties; and can benefit from learning new ways of performing familiar tasks. Partial funding for services to persons over the age of 60 years is provided by the Older Americans Act through the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging and the Area Agencies on Aging 1A, 1B, and 1C, and by your tax-deductible contributions.
