Recreation and Athletics Resources

Welcome to our page on recreational resources. Here we have assembled links to web sites and other resources of a recreational nature. We have also included enrichment resources of special interest to the visually impaired. If you have any suggestions for additions to this page, please let us know.

  • Accessible Games. The Accessible Games web site features Windows 95/98 computer games written by a blind person for blind users. Currently, the games are written to interface directly with JAWS for Windows version 3.3 or higher as well as Window-Eyes version 3.1.
  • Accessible Vacation Home Exchange from the Institute on Independent Living. The Institute on Independent Living offers a service to help people with extensive disabilities make contact with others who would like to swap their homes during vacations. This service lets people with special needs travel to other parts of the world with the knowledge that they will be living in a home with the accommodations they need for their specific situation.
  • Bavisoft. Bavisoft is a software company dedicated to high-quality, entertaining software for the blind and visually impaired. Their multimedia adventure game, "Grizzly Gulch," is now available for purchase.
  • The Campanian Society: Programs and Services for the Blind and Limited Vision Persons. The Campanian Society, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the humanities and the fine arts and in the social and cultural history of Naples and Campania and of the ancient Greco-Roman world. In particular The Campanian Society, Inc. sponsors activities and programs that are designed to heighten awareness and critical appreciation of the classical humanities, Greek and Roman social history, fine arts and architecture. 
  • Disabled Sports USA. Disabled Sports USA provides sports and recreation activities for people with disabilities. It is a member of the US Olympic Committee.
  • ESP Softworks. ESP Softworks is a new company developing several software titles for people who are blind or visually impaired. These are to be vivid multimedia games that go beyond the text adventures of the past.
  • Imagine Radio page for blind listeners. Imagine Radio is an Internet audio service with channels of various types of music content.  Their main page is virtually without text of any kind which makes it extremely difficult for a blind user to navigate. This alternative page is much better.
  • Music V.I. This site features instructional material in an all-audio format for learning piano or guitar. Other instruments appear to be in the works as well. This site is the successor to the Guitar By Ear site we have listed in this resource area previously.
  • National Arts and Disability Center. The National Arts and Disability Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into the visual-, performing-, media-, and literary- arts communities.
  • No-C-Notes. No-C-Notes is an audio method for expressing music notation verbally. It provides a compact and unambiguous way to read music notation aloud or onto audio tape. The web site gives contact information for ordering study materials that teach the method.
  • United States Association of Blind Athletes. The United States Association of Blind Athletes is a nonprofit amateur sport organization providing sport opportunities at the
    state, regional, national and international levels for the legally blind.
  • Wild Swan Theater. Wild Swan Theater, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been delighting family audiences since 1980 with performances that blend storytelling, movement, and music into magical, accessible experiences. Wild Swan provides both audio captioning for visually impaired audience members and American Sign Language for the hearing impaired.
