Welcome to the Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired
educational resources page. In this ever-changing world there are many reasons
why learning needs to be an ongoing process. We hope the resources on this page
will prove helpful.
Education Web Sites
- Michigan Parents of Children with
Visual Impairments: Resources for Parents. The MPVI resources page
includes numerous links to information on educational programs geared to
persons with special needs. It also contains links to Public Broadcasting
System children's and family programming that emphasizes many types of
learning.
- Perkins School for the Blind,
Watertown, Massachusetts. Perkins was the first school for the blind in
the United States. They provide a wide variety of services locally,
nationally, and internationally.
- Texas School for the Blind and Visually
Impaired. This site not only contains information about the school itself,
but it also has a wide array of other educational resources.
- Hadley School for the Blind,
Winnetka, Illinois.
Hadley is famous for its wide range of college level courses that it offers,
free of charge, by correspondence. Blind adults, family members of blind
persons, and professionals in the blindness field are eligible to participate
in the Hadley program.

Courseware for Visually Impaired Students from Microsoft. Microsoft
Corporation offers special "Optic Packs" for visually impaired students for
some of their certification courses. These packs include the standard set of
study materials as well as copies of the printed manuals and study guides on
floppy disk.
Educational Software
- The Computerized
Nemeth Tutor. The Computerized Nemeth Tutor is a program for Microsoft
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 intended to teach the Nemeth Braille Code for
Mathematics and Science Notation to sighted persons who already know braille.
- The Computerized
Braille Tutor. The Computerized Braille Tutor is a DOS-based computer
program for teaching or refreshing the skills of a person wishing to become
familiar with Grade 2 Braille. It is intended principly for sighted persons
wishing to learn to write Braille or to transcribe materials into braille.
