The Computerized Nemeth Code Tutor is a Microsoft Windows-based tutorial program intended to teach the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation to sighted persons who already know Braille. It is not designed to work with screen readers for the visually impaired. The tutor was developed by the Research and Development Institute, 1732 Raintree, Sycamore, IL 60178.
This program requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher. Hard disk space required can vary widely due to the large number of small files comprising the program. On a large hard disk (where files are allocated in large chunks of disk space) the tutorial can take up 160 megabytes of space, while disk space requirements can be as small as 13 megabytes on a small (30 megabyte) hard disk. The program is supplied as three files: setup.exe, setup.2, and setup.3. Each of these files will fit on a 1.44 megabyte floppy disk, or they can be run from a directory on your hard drive.
To install the tutor, do the following. First, download the three files, setup.exe, setup.2, and setup.3, paying attention to the recommendations below about downloading binary files from a web site.
If you are downloading the files to a hard disk, be sure to place all three files in the same directory (or folder, if you prefer) on your hard disk. Then change to the directory that contains the files and run setup.exe. The installation program for the tutor will use all three files in the installation process. You need not, and should not, attempt to run setup.2 or setup.3 by itself. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If you are installing from a set of floppy disks, insert the disk with setup.exe on it, and run setup.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Your computer should prompt you when it wants the disks with setup.2 and setup.3 on them. Do not attempt to run either setup.2 or setup.3 separately.
The next three links on this page will let you download the three files of the tutor. Because these are binary files, we suggest right-clicking on the links in Netscape or Internet Explorer and then choosing from the displayed menu the option to "save target to disk" or "Save file as ...". Other browsers may have other file saving options. Be sure to save each file as binary data so that the information in each file is preserved in its original format.:
